Run Your Own Race

“God has given me the ability.  The rest is up to me. Believe. Believe.  Believe.” –Billy Mills

When I ran track in high school I mostly ran the 400m dash. Man, did I hate that race! I didn’t want to run the race, because it seemed hard to run a full sprint around the whole track. I didn’t think I could do it, let alone do it well. Well my coach thought different. He not only believed that I could do it, but that I could do it in record time. He pushed me where some days I would be so exhausted I would cry after practice. ‘Why was he pushing me so much’ I would cry out tired.

My coach taught me an important lesson my freshman year about the importance of taking responsibility over our own lives. We are the ones who have control over what it is we want to do or where it is we want to go. Sometimes it may seem like everything is out of control. Things are going so fast that it’s hard to get a grasp on all the moving parts of life. Remember this – you have the control to decide on what happens with you. You have control over yourself and your decisions. The ONE key thing that you should take responsibility of today is your thoughts. Thats is where everything starts.

Here’s the thing – no one can run your race. Yes, there will be people there to help, maybe even some who seem to believe in your more than you do. But still, they cannot do the work for you.  You have to believe in yourself and put in the work for yourself. Know that you have control over the key parts of your life. Take control of your thoughts and habits…Run the only race you’re responsible for – run your own race – no one else can do it.
